Vast and grand, monumental

The Trees

The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread,
Their greenness is a kind of grief.

Is it that they are born again
And we grow old? No, they die too,
Their yearly trick of looking new
Is written down in rings of grain.

Yet still the unresting castles thresh
In fullgrown thickness every May.
Last year is dead, they seem to say,
Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.

I bought ‘Marquee Moon’ by Television based on an employee recommendation card at Subterranean Records in New York when I was there for one day with my friends at age 19. I believe the card said ‘guitar rock’s greatest album’. That and the cover art sold me, and it turned into a daily listen for years. On the way back to Ohio, a friend in the van said it sounded like Violent Femmes, and I’ve never forgiven them.
